Dell Latitude XT2 XFR: World’s First Rugged Multi-Touch Tablet

http://mms.businesswire.com/bwapps/mediaserver/ViewMedia?mgid=202632&vid=5&download=1

Dell LatitudeXT2 XFR
Dell recently announced their new 12.1-inchLatitude XT2 XFR Tablet PC which is the world’s first rugged tablet with a multi-touch display. The system is designed for use in the field by the military, police, security, factory fulfillment, healthcare and delivery services where maximum-durability is crucial.

The XT2 XFR convertible tablet adds to Dell’s Rugged Mobility Solution range - which includes the ultra-tough Latitude E6400XFR we’ve been in awe of previously - featuring compression-sealed I/O doors, LCD and keyboard for resistance to moisture and dust at a high IP54 level of Ingress Protection. The "5"means that the machine is most probably protected against dust, and the "4" means it's also protected against water spray from all directions, with limited ingress permitted.

Featuring an impact-resistant, sunlight-viewable 12.1-inch diagonally wide 16:10 Aspect ratio with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution & capacitive multi-touch display or alternatively a resistive touchscreen with following features

  • Scroll by placing two fingers onto the screen and then drag them left, right, up or down.

  • Rotate by placing one finger and then moving another finger around it.

  • Zoom by touching the screen with two fingers and then pinching them or moving them apart.

  • Double-tap with two fingers can generate a user-defined command to the computer.

Unlike the the majority of pen input devices that uses Wacom digitizer,Dell chose N-trig DuoSence technology that provides both pen and capacitive touch. Why both? because there are applications where touch is the best input method, and other applications where the precision and cursor tracking of an active digitizer works best. The XT2 runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo ultra SU9600, a speedy and low voltage processor that's excellent for this type of machine with Intel GMA 4500 graphics, up to 5GB of DDR3 memory and your choice of 64GB/128GB SSD(Solid State Disk) and shock-mounted 5400rpm160GB HDD storage options. The Latitude XT2 also includes a fingerprint reader, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi a/g/n, mobile broadband options, 3 x USB ports (one shared with eSATA), Firewire, Gigabit Ethernet, a gesture enabled trackpad , a digitizer pen, point stick, stereo headphone jack and either 4 or 6-cell primary batteries or a mega 9-cell slice.Being able to withstand drops from up to 3 feet and temps from minus 10 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the XT2 can take a lot of abuse (video below). Surprisingly though, it’s also the thinnest 12.1-inch rugged convertible tablet around - measuring just 1.5 inches (38.1mm) thick and with a weight of only 5.4-pounds.

Shipping with Windows XP by default, (Pro and Ultimate versions of windows7 look like they’re on the way) the Latitude XT2 XFR rugged multi-touch tablet is available now direct from Dell starting at $3,599.

ASUS previews new ION-based EeeBox

ASUS took the world by storm when it release the original EeePC netbook a couple of years ago, and while the nettop EeeBoxes never received quite as much fanfare, they certainly bring a lot of interesting features and design to the table. The latest revision is the EeeBox PC EB1501, a very small form factor PC that still manages to fit in an optical drive, decent graphics performance and all the connectivity you could ask for.

To start, the new EeeBox devices have a sleeker design than ever, keeping the angled approach that provides easy access to the front ports while refining the style a bit. Inside, ASUS has decided to go with a dual-core Intel Atom 330 CPU, so while it's still very much a low-power processor, the second core will be able to help out with some tasks, like graphically-intensive web pages, without bringing the entire system to a halt. The 330 is paired with an NVIDIA 9400M graphics subsystem so decoding HD content won't be a problem -- and with recent news about Adobe managing to finally deliver on GPU-accelerated Flash content, then neither will advanced Flash videos and games, which have been a traditional sticking point for these systems.

Specifications

  • Processor: Intel Atom 330 @ 1.6GHz
  • Memory: 2GB DDR2 @ 800MHz, 2 slots (up to 4GB max)
  • Hard drive: 250GB 2.5-inch SATA
  • Optical drive: Slot-loading Super multi DVD+/-RW
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
  • Chipset: NVIDIA Ion
  • Networking: Gigabit Ethernet
  • Wireless networking: 802.11/b/g/n
  • Inputs: 4x USB2.0, SD card reader, VGA and HDMI out, 1x eSATA, Headphone and S/PDIF out, Mic in
  • Power supply: 65W externa,
  • Dimensions: 193 x 193 x 39 mm (HxDxW)
  • Weight: 2.64 lb
While the unit will come with a wired keyboard and mouse by default, ASUS will make wireless units as well as a remote control available as options. The EeeBox will come in both black and white color options. So far, in terms of pricing and availability, ASUS has said that it'll run around $580 in Europe, so we might see something like a $499 or lower price point here in the US. It's expected to launch sometime around the ship of Windows 7, which is scheduled for October 22nd.

Sony VAIO X: World’s Lightest Notebook Launches With Carbon Fiber Body

Sony VAIO X Series Notebook

Sony day before yesterday announced their new VAIO X Series Notebooks which the company claims are the world’s lightest, thanks to a carbon-fiber body construction. The 1.6-pound featherweight notebook is a mere 0.2-pounds heavier than Sony’s diminutive VAIO P netbook and is ultra-thin too, measuring a tiny 0.55-inches thick across its entire length.

Fitted with 11.1-inch scratch-resistant widescreen LCDs and running on 2GHz Intel Atom processors, the VAIO X Series also includes Intel GMA500 graphics, 2GB RAM, a 64GB SSD and the upcoming Windows 7 as standard. Battery life is relatively low at just 3.5 hours, but every model comes equipped with a second extended battery (similar to HP's Envy13) that also doubles as a tilted base for easier typing and boosts operating time to a whopping 14 hours.

Equipped with built-in Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband and real-time GPS functionality for turn-by-turn maps without an internet connection, the VAIO X also includes Bluetooth, WiFi b/g/n, a built-in camera and microphone, an SD card slot and Memory Stick Pro reader (with MagicGate), 2 x USB ports, a headphone jack, VGA, gigabit ethernet and a multi-touch trackpad that recognizes pinch, flip and rotate commands.

The VAIO X Series measures a mere 10.95 x 0.55 x 7.29 inches and is available now from Sony on pre-order starting at $1,299.99 . If gold is your thing, there is also a Limited Edition Signature Collection version that bumps your SSD capacity to 128GB and the price tag to $1,499.99 . Both models begin shipping next month.
